My name is Tom. I am 26 years old and I love to travel. I like to see new cities and countries. One city on my list was Venice in Italy. I saw a video about it on YouTube and I knew I wanted to go there. Now I was finally there!
My plane landed at Venice-Marco Polo (VCE). I was excited when I left the baggage claim. I looked around the arrival hall. A man who looked Chinese and was dressed like he was from the Middle Ages came up to me. He gave me a city map of Venice.
“Thank you, that’s very kind!“ I smiled at the man.
I saw a tattoo on his wrist—a snake on a blue glass ball. I thought it was strange, but I did not worry because I was happy to explore the city. I put the map in my pocket and walked away.
I bought a ticket for the Vaporettos. These are boats that help you move around Venice quickly. I opened the city map. It was hand-drawn and had small notes like Here you can find the best coffee or Watch out for the friendly cat!
Near Piazza San Marco, I got off the boat and walked in the small streets. Without the map, I would have felt lost. I leaned on a wall and tried to see where I was.
I decided to visit some of the places on the map. I found a small shop called Antiquities and Curiosities. It was not in my travel guide. I had to go inside!
Inside the shop, an elderly Chinese man winked at me. “Ah, you have found the magical city map!“
What is he talking about?
I noticed he had a tattoo on his arm with a snake on a blue glass ball. When I left the shop, I saw that the map had changed. New paths and hints appeared on the map.
I thought this was strange but also exciting. I followed the new directions and found places I would not have seen before. I found an entrance with the words Mirror Library above it. I felt drawn to it and went in. It was an old library with many mirrors between the shelves. I bumped my head a few times. I learned that I had to walk slowly and carefully among the mirrors.
At one big mirror, I saw my own reflection and a little boy. When I turned around, there was no one.
Where did he go? Who was he? He looked like... ME!
